Estimated Reading Time:
The season retail hiring season is in full swing. As you go through the holiday hiring process, it is also a good time to do a self-audit on your hiring, employee background check and onboarding process in order to hire the best staff and bring more sales to your stores during the holiday season.
2016 Holiday Hiring & Sales Predictions
The National Retail Federation (NRF) is predicting holiday sales this year will increase 3.6 % to $655.8 billion. Holiday sales increased last year 3.2 % over 2014 sales, so there has been a slow but steady growth trend the last few years. The NRF’s holiday forecast is based on an economic model using the following components: consumer credit, disposable personal income and the previous month’s retail sales releases. The NRF also predicts that retailers will hire anywhere between 640,000 to 690,000 seasonal workers in 2016. The big retailers such as Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, Macy’s, J.C. Penney’s and others have all released the number of holiday workers they are expecting to hire for the 2016 season and are in the full hiring and training time of the season.
Snagajob’s 2016 Annual Holiday Hiring Report agreed with NRF for the number of new holiday jobs for 2016, but also mentioned that there will be a large increase in the amount of temporary workers in the distribution centers of online retailers such as Amazon, Target and Walmart to cover the high demand of online shopping. The report found that 90% of employers plan on hiring this year, up 10% from last year and 86% of employers are likely to hire temporary workers full time after the holidays.
Seasonal hiring: Are You Connected? Do You Have a Mobile Hiring Experience?
The landscape of retail is changing with more shoppers browsing and buying online with once again holiday online shopping predicted to grow. Over 46% of consumers plan to do holiday shopping online and 21.4% will be shopping via their smartphones. Just as shoppers are using their mobile devices to shop, job seekers are looking for ways to engage in the same way with retail employers. About a quarter of the retail workforce are under the age of 25. Millennials currently make up the largest share of the U.S. workforce and that will only continue to grow. This generation is mobile and very tech savvy. 90% of this group search for jobs on their mobile devices and use mobile apps. Currently, there are not many employers using mobile in the same way as the job seekers, but they are beginning to understand the importance of a mobile job application, hiring and background screening process. Having a good mobile experience from application to onboarding could earn your brand praise in the millennial’s networks, which include potential shoppers and even potential employee referrals. Going mobile benefits HR and hiring managers in their work as well. If candidates have anytime, anywhere access to complete the hiring paperwork, HR and hiring managers can get their seasonal workers into positions much faster.
Millennials are well-connected and vocal through social media. According to Snagajob’s survey, 90% of young adults aged 18 to 29 are the most likely to use social media. Employers are beginning to use social media for hiring related activities. Snagajob’s survey also revealed that half of the employers it surveyed have company guidelines for screening job applicants through social media profiles, which is an increase of 16% over the past two years. For recruiting on social media, Facebook is the best platform followed by LinkedIn and Twitter.
The best brand advocates will be those that are engaged with your brand and that engagement begins during the seasonal hiring experience. Ask yourself if you communicated the brand effectively, engaged new hires with rich media during the hiring process and make it easy for new employees to complete their paperwork from their mobile device. Don’t let a negative hiring process cost you a first-choice hire, land you bad review on Glassdoor or damage your brand. Allowing seasonal workers to electronically sign a disclosure and authorization for background and drug screening, complete new hire paperwork on their phone and watch a welcome video from within a company-branded portal on their mobile devices will bring new employees into their roles already engaged and excited for what opportunities will come after the holidays.
