CTRL.ATL.HACK: Sterling Talent Solutions in Atlanta Hosted Its First Technology Hackathon
Have you heard of a hackathon? If you were a computer programmer, you know all about what this word means and you even might have participated in a few for fun (or for business) in your college years and business career. According to Wikipedia, a hackathon is “a design sprint-like event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers and others, often including subject-matter-experts, collaborate intensively on software projects.” Hackathons happen all the time all over the world in all different fields and industries.
The term, “hackathon” was created by developers for OpenBSD and the marketing team at Sun in 1999. The collaborative and competitive events became more widespread in the late 2000s and have grown in popularity ever since. Hackathons can last just one day, a few days (such as over a weekend) or sometimes even up to a week. The computer programming events are intended for educational or social purposes, but the ultimate goal is to create usable software. Hackathons have a specific focus which can include the programming language used, the operating system, application, an API or the subject and the demographic group of the programmers. The weekend events can also have workshops, guest speakers, networking and team-building events.

The Sterling Talent Solutions Atlanta office hosted its first annual hackathon, CTRL.ATL.HACK, from March 27-31. The hackathon was an exciting event that showcased the innovation and talent of our Atlanta and Remote technology staff – and they did not disappoint! Eleven teams entered and over 45 technologists participated in this thrilling five-day event, culminating in team project presentations followed by an office-wide vote for the winner.
This year’s winning team was “The Singularities,” members included Mike Fried, Joseph Scott, Aaron Sherber, Eric Ullman and James Likovic. They produced a Chatbot utilizing Amazon’s LEX cloud service that allowed for candidates to schedule drug screening clinical services via a chat platform and also via Facebook Messenger.
While the LEX service from Amazon is still in preview program mode, this innovative approach showed the viability of integrating intelligent conversational interfaces with clients and candidates from Sterling platforms in the near future.
