New Form I-9 Review Needed after USCIS Found Glitch

On November 14, 2016, the USCIS published a revised version of the Form I-9. At the time, employers were given a choice to use the new revised version (v.11/16/2016 N) of Form I-9, or they could use the previous version of Form I-9 dated 03/08/2013 N through January 21, 2017. Effective January 22, 2017, all employers must use the new revised Form I-9 for employment verification purposes. Temporary Glitch Found on New Form I-9
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently reported that there was a temporary glitch in the new Form I-9 when it was released to the public on November 14th until November 17th. The USCIS is encouraging employers to review the Form I-9 downloaded for use for those three days to make sure that the social security number is appearing correctly in Section 1 of the form. It was discovered that during that time, numbers entered in the social security number field were transposed when employees completed and printed Section 1 using a computer. For example, the number 123-45-6789 entered in the social security number field would appear as 123-34-6789 once the form was printed.
The USCIS is instructing employers to check which form they downloaded to see if there is an error with the social security number. Those employers who notice their employee’s social security numbers are not written correctly on the form to, “Have their employees draw a line through the transposed social security number in Section 1, enter the correct social security number and then initial and date the change. Employers should also include a written explanation with Form I-9 about why the correction was made in the event of an audit.”
Once the USCIS was made aware of the glitch, they immediately fixed the error and reposted the form on November 17, 2016. USCIS encourages employers who downloaded the new form between November 14th to 17th, should download and save a new Form I-9 on I-9 Central.

Form I-9 is used to establish both identity and employment authorization for individuals (citizens and non-citizens) hired for employment in the United States. All employers must accurately complete and retain Form I-9 for every person hired for employment on or after November 6, 1986, in the United States. Form I-9 can be completed electronically or on paper.
