HR Insights from SHRM18 Correlate with Trends in the Background Screening Industry

The fast-paced and sometimes overwhelming excitement of SHRM18 in Chicago is now past us. The Sterling Talent Solutions team was in full force speaking with attendees about how we can help them hire with confidence and how they can get faster, transparent and accurate background screening results tailored to their company or industry. We would like to thank everyone for taking time out of their busy conference schedule to stop by our booth, share ideas and feedback with our team.
Insights from SHRM18
There were over 16,000 attendees at SHRM18 in Chicago. The conference offered over 200 sessions (both concurrent and mega) organized into tracks with information ranging from Global HR, Talent Management and HR Compliance. A key theme presented to attendees from the Board Chair, Coretha Rushing was for HR professionals to be authentic, human and genuine. This is even more important in the time of globalization and technological advancements.
Top SHRM18 HR Trends
For SHRM17, the stand out most-discussed topics included employee appreciation, opportunities for millennials to grow in the HR field, the global workforce and the importance of data. While these trends were all prevalent at this year’s conference, there were other spotlighted topics. With #MeToo being a major newsmaker in the past six months, there was more of an underlying emphasis on harassment, inclusion and civility throughout the conference. In fact, two of the keynote speakers Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and Oscar Munoz, CEO of United Airlines, mentioned the movement in their speeches and there were many seminars that discussed the topic. SHRM also had HR bloggers shared their insights on seminars, vendors and other events throughout the conference including David Kovacovich who shared the technology trends shared by vendors at the expo. Some of the key takeaways from this year’s conference included, but were not limited to:
- Small Business Needs: There is a growing trend among vendors who are focusing on the HR needs of small to mid-size businesses. With everything from podcasting to background screening platforms, the importance of the SMB market is very important and should not be ignored.
- Global Workforce: We are truly a global workforce. Organizations are reaching out to talent in countries across the globe from Brazil to China. Top companies are attracting talent via a variety of well-rounded employee benefits, such as flextime, working from home and unlimited vacation time.
- Make It Simple: HR professionals are looking for a way to make their lives simpler from consolidating multiple CRM, ATS and background screening platforms into one overall HR platform to streamlining their daily processes. Simplicity is a big trend for the next year.
HR Trends Correlate to Background Screening Industry
Many of the HR trends that were discussed at sessions and the vendor expo during SHRM18 directly correlate to the background screening industry. The 2017-2018 Background Screening Trends & Best Practices Report uncovered details to how HR professionals think about components of the hiring process and how they relate to the background screening industry, how emerging technology is impacting the candidate experience and emerging trends in employment background screening. The top priorities of survey participants paralleled with conversations our teams had with attendees at SHRM18. Companies want to get new hires in the door quickly and efficiently with quality information for informed hiring decisions.
