On August 1, 2014 two new laws took effect in Louisiana to assist in the hiring of ex-offenders.
House bill 505, which protects an employer against a claim of negligent hiring, solely because that employee or independent contractor had previously been convicted of a criminal offense. The law does not include crimes of violence and sex offenses. The full text can be found here. http://www.legis.la.gov/legis/ViewDocument.aspx?d=912793
House bill 55, which prevents an employer from inquiring into an applicant or employee’s expunged criminal record. Under the new law expunged records are considered confidential and are no longer part of the public record. The law also prohibits an employer from requiring an individual to disclose an expunged record. The full text can be found here. http://www.legis.la.gov/legis/ViewDocument.aspx?d=908131
